Rule-based chatbots vs. website-trained AI assistants

If you have looked at adding chat to your website, you have probably seen three kinds of tools sold under the same name. They behave very differently.

Rule-based chatbots

The classic chatbot is a decision tree: buttons and scripted replies. It is predictable and cheap, and it is good for a handful of fixed paths like “Book a call” or “Track my order”.

The weakness is everything outside the script. Visitors do not ask questions the way your menu expects, and someone has to rewrite the tree every time the website changes.

Generic AI chat

A general-purpose AI model dropped into a chat box can talk about anything — which is the problem. Without your website’s facts it fills gaps with confident guesses, and it may answer questions that have nothing to do with your business.

Assistants trained on your website

A website-trained assistant reads your own pages and answers from them, with links back to the page. Done well, it also keeps up as the website changes, refuses to invent things your website does not say, and hands the visitor to you when a person is needed.

Questions to ask any vendor

  • Where do answers come from — my website, a document I upload, or the model’s general knowledge?
  • How does it notice when I change or remove a page?
  • Can I correct an answer in my own words, and does that win?
  • Does it link to my pages, or just paste paragraphs?
  • What does it read from the page a visitor is on? Does it ever read form fields?
  • What stops bots and spammers from running up my bill?
  • Can I see what it learned about a specific page?
  • How do I turn it off, and what happens to the data?

Which one fits?

If you only need two or three fixed paths, a scripted bot is fine. If visitors ask varied questions about information that is already on your website, a website-trained assistant saves you the most time — provided it stays current and stays honest about what it does not know.

The short version: Judge chat tools by where their answers come from and how they keep up with your website, not by the demo.
